Wood has a natural texture and warmth that just invites you to interact with it.
I have worked in wood for as long as I can remember. My interest in woodworking was kindled at school and developed further during my time at Jacob Kramer College of Art in Leeds. It was here that I gained my formal qualifications as a furniture designer and maker.
After a few years in the wilderness I decided to train as a teacher of Design Technology. I have greatly enjoyed the last 20 years in the classroom but the desire to make furniture endures. I have therefore been reducing my teaching commitment over the last couple of years to refine my making skills again. I have now moved into my workshop in the Old Tile Works to allow me to make furniture full time.
I now design and make freestanding pieces pieces of furniture, boxes and anything else I think would make an interesting project. My pieces are made predominently in solid wood though I do use decorative veneers to further enhance a piece where it is appropriate to do so. I like to work with hand tools using traditional techniques where possible. I do however recognise that using machinery can bring advantages to my work.
